Changing a car tyre is actually a simple task if you know what the steps are, that’s why we’ve written a short guide below to help and guide you through the process:
- As soon as you discover you have a puncture pull over at the next safest place and stop the vehicle, make sure you’re in the safest position and your car isn’t going to obstruct any others.
- Once you have stopped put your handbrake on, turn your hazard lights on and if your car is a standard manual then put it in gear. Once the previous steps have been taken get out your jack, wrench and spare tyre and place them next to the punctured tyre.
- If your car has any hub caps then remove them (they should pull off easily) then use the wrench by turning counter clockwise to undo the nuts that hold the wheel to the car. Make sure to keep both the hub cap and the nuts in a safe location as these need to go back onto the car!
- Next you need to lift your car off the ground so you can remove the tyre. You do this by placing the jack underneath the car on a solid load bearing point (consult your owners manual for the best locations) and lifting your vehicle until it’s approximately 6 inches from the ground.
- Pull the tyre from the car and place it on the floor, the tyre should come loose easily.
- Put the spare tyre on the car in the same position of the old one, push it fully back onto the bolts.
- Now you need to put the nuts back on the car, replace these and tighten them to a point where the wheel will stay on the car but is not too tight.
- Carefully drop the car back to the ground and then remove the jack from underneath the car.
- Next you need to fully tighten the nuts and you need to do this in a certain way to ensure there is no excess stress on any one nut. To do this you will need to turn each nut gradually by about half a turn and then moving onto the nut diagonal to the previous one. Keep making the nuts tighter until they are as tight as can be. If you get to this stage then you’ve successfully changed your first tyre!
- Put your old flat tyre back in the storage area and make sure you haven’t left any tools on the road surface and then you will be good to drive away – although be careful as some space savers will cause the cars handling to feel different and your spare tyre may have lost some air pressure whilst it has not been used.
